The AWA Dance Initiative is a platform of women that support women of all ages, run under the umbrella of Avatâra Ayuso and her company AVA Dance. AWA Dance stands for Advancing Women's Aspirations in Dance. AWA Dance supports the development of women of any age, and cultural background that have an interest in dance in a professional and non professional context. The women of the network are professionals in their field, and passionate to share their experience and knowledge offering mentoring and observership opportunities, work placements and teaching sessions among other activities. We are hoping to offer inspirational role models to girls and women to all ages from all ages from any cultural background.
Since Avatâra was a child, she has travelled around the world with her parents from Africa to South America and across Europe. Throughout her travels she met the Women of the World, the characters that are silenced, oppressed but that have the will to survive like no other human, but observing and experiencing it herself was not enough. This immense admiration for women inspired Avatâra in her mission to empower other girls and women. It was in 2013 when she decided it was time to change things actively, from within, to fully commit to equality and empowerment of others. She not only set about doing this through her artistic choreographic work and dance teaching activities (such as her dance Talent Development Program supporting male and female dancers), but also by mentoring and offering work opportunities to women of all ages. AWA Dance is about women who dare to challenge the current establishments, and that believe equality is beneficial for all , by also understanding that boys and men need to be allowed develop another sensibility, beacuse as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie says “We can remake masculinity. We can change it from this narrow cage that traps men into a human idea. We can expect men to be vulnerable. We can give men the language of emotion. We can teach men to respect the autonomy of women"
Our current projects are: the HAMS a group of refugee and non-refugee women from Middle East and Africa based in Dresden (Germany); and THREEWOMENTHREEFILMS a short film trilogy on women and extreme landscapes (see the trailer of the first film I AM RAJA). We are currently developing the next phase of AWA Dance Initiative creating online resources, intercultural exchanges and awards for outstanding achievement. If you are a man or woman of the world and want to get involved to develop the next phase, we would love to hear from you. Please get in touch at info @ avadancecompany.com. We look forward to meeting you.
